About Us
Protecting African Wildlife Conservation Trust is a non-profit organization based in Northeast South Africa.
The core of PAW’s directors are professional environmental scientists with decades of experience across a broad spectrum of issues.
They provide management of our conservation projects and enable the organization to consistently develop and apply new methods of

What we do
We support research and conservation projects. There are two main criteria used for selecting our research projects. One is problem
solving related issues such as management of habitats for the health of a specific ecosystem. The second one is protection of
species selected in order of priority. The principles used as guidelines to determine priority are based on one or a combination of
criterions such as: those formulated by International Union for the Conservation of Nature (IUCN), the National Biodiversity Strategy
Action Plan (NBSAP) and specific conservation needs in a province itself.
The spectrum of research covers most areas of conservation, as all are interlinked and important to support ecological processes and
systems. One of our main focuses is collecting essential and empirical base-line data to support research initiatives, policy
formulation, and sustainable resource management of the province’s rich biodiversity of plants and wildlife. PAW also strives to
promote a general awareness of problems and issues facing conservation to the global conservation community.
Although PAW is based in South Africa, and supports the conservation and cultural aspects of South Africa, it is also committed to
assist and collaborate with similar organizations worldwide. We believe that involving communities, networking with other non-profit
and non-governmental organizations (NPO’s and NGO’s), and forming alliances with other official conservation bodies is the new face
of conservation.
We encourage voluntary assistance from scientists and research students as well as from all people who wish to learn more about the
natural environment whilst participating in practical and meaningful conservation initiatives. PAW aims for our volunteers to have an
exciting and purposeful adventure contributing towards environmental conservation and education. Although our projects are based in
South Africa, we believe participants contribute to benefits beyond borders, as biodiversity is part of our global heritage.
